One of the most complex joints in your body is the temporomandibular joint, also known as the TMJ. It helps to open and close your jaw. The TMJ has a unique sliding motion, and it can be moved out of position from an accident or injury. When the TMJ doesn’t slide easily, friction and damage to the joint can happen.
Signs and symptoms of TMJ problems
When your TMJ is not moving smoothly, the joint can become damaged over time, resulting in painful symptoms, which can become severe. These symptoms can include:
- Chronic, recurring headaches
- Radiating, aching facial pain
- Pain in or around your ears
- Tenderness and pain in your jaw
- Pain and difficulty chewing
- Popping or clicking when you move your jaws
- Your jaws locking in place when you open and close your mouth
TMJ issues can turn into TMD
Occasional jaw pain can happen, but if you notice the signs and symptoms listed above occurring frequently and becoming more severe, your TMJ issues can turn into temporomandibular joint disorder, known as TMD.
How you can minimize TMD symptoms
You can take some steps to minimize TMD symptoms. Remember to avoid chewing gum and hard, sticky, or chewy foods. Applying ice or moist heat to your jaws and gently massaging your jaw muscles can help alleviate mild symptoms.
How your chiropractor can treat TMJ issues and TMD
Your chiropractor will determine whether your TMJ or TMD issues are caused by the muscles holding the jaw or your spine. Once the cause has been determined, your chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help you get relief. Your treatment plan may include:
- Spinal adjustments, to help realign your spine and jaw
- Home exercises, to help alleviate pain and strengthen muscles holding your jaw
- Physical therapy to decrease stiffness and promote smooth joint movement
- Therapeutic jaw massage to relax jaw muscles
